Mokveld supplied four pieces 26” duplex stainless steel HIPPS with a 2500 pound pressure rating for an FPSO on one of the deep sea oil reservoirs which are now in exploration. These large super duplex valves are installed in a system designed for 370 bar and will protect the ship from overpressure from the reservoir. The end-user selected the Mokveld HIPPS for its reliability and low weight compact design.
The reliability figures and third party validated field data are based on over 3700 valves with more than 50 000 operational years. These figures convinced the client that their floating facility and its personnel would be safely protected against over pressure. The specified SIL3, in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, requires a Systematic Capability (SC3) made possible by Mokveld’s functional safety management system (FSM).
The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is paramount in today’s industry. HIPPS is an ideal technology to reduce flaring. By isolating the source of overpressure, the potential emissions when flaring are reduced to zero which allows the client to improve its GHG scope 1 reductions.
Beside these reliability arguments there was a practical argument too. On an FPSO deck load and deck space come at a premium. The axial on-off valves with integrated linear actuators allow a small footprint. The compact set-up of these 26”/#2500 valves resulted also in a weight benefit of a factor 2 compared with a similar ball valve system with scotch yoke actuators.
